Board Packet Weight-Loss
Board agenda packets tend to get bloated over time. It’s hard to remove items once they get in there. We get use to seeing them and fear removing them: maybe they’re required? how would we look taking it out after all these years? What if something happens?
As a result, packets tend to weigh more than they ought to. More importantly, material relevant to fiduciary duties gets buried under irrelevant, low-level and trivial material.
WARNING: As organizations join the “green” movement, or desire greater productivity, the effort to deliver the Board’s information online does not resolve the above issue about focus and relevance. Going to E-Governance before reinventing the board’s knowledge base can make conditions worse. Consider what management consultant and author Peter Drucker once wrote …
“There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”
Philosophies
Directors have a fiduciary responsibility and want to avoid legal entanglements. As the world becomes more complex and remains in a state of regulatory flux, a director needs to focus more on what is truly important based on external pressures and your plans. We respect your uniqueness; no two organizations are alike even though operating in the same field of endeavor.
Customized to suit your board’s culture and your plans.
Benefits of a Lighter Packet
- Directors focus on and spend more time on critical, big-picture strategic issues … looking forward;
- Directors save hundreds of hours yearly;
- Agenda materials inspire study and make more sense to the creative Board of the 21st Century; and
- Executive and administrative time are reduced — imagine the monetary value of that!
Improve the Board’s whole knowledge management system.
Receive objective views and innovative ideas from a long-time professional. Allow your “weight trainer,” Dan Clark, CCUE, to help you as he has many others, including where he once hung his coat: “When I was a credit union CEO, we cut the agenda packet in half, down to about 35 pages: the directors were happier and more knowledgeable because the minutiae was gone.”

Gather up these documents:
- Two typical, recent, and complete board agenda packets (include a quarter-end) just the way the directors received it; if delivered electronically, once we have a signed agreement and my confidentiality committment, you’ll guide me in to see what I need to see.
- A copy of your plans (vision, strategic, and long-range).
- Excerpts of Board Governance Policies delegating authority to the CEO and committees.
Order a check for the chosen program fee payable to Dan Clark Associates LLC (unless you paid for Basic or Silver on your credit card); remember to include funds to cover toll-free conference access if you want it.
Mail the check and the prescribed documents to:
