Coaching

What Coaching Is

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help their clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives both on and off work.

If you ever want to do it yourself but weren’t sure where to start; if you ever  felt overwhelmed by choices; if you ever felt isolated, that no one understands your role and challenges and needed someone to let you unload and reorganize your thoughts, then, like many people in your shoes, a coach can help.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to ask questions. Coaches customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

As noted in Harvard Business Review, The Geography of Trust, by Saj-nicole A. Joni (March 2004), “The most successful leaders understand that trust is a function of relationships as well as integrity and expertise… A leader needs informed, disinterested advice from sources committed to that leader’s success but who have no personal stake in it… Strong outside advisers provide leaders with a resource that their organizations cannot.” An outside advisor, in this case a coach, supplies an outsider’s insights that inoculates the leader against myopia, and is an effective sounding board. We can be your “third opinion” source.

Coaching is not:

  • consulting, where a subject matter expert is expected to know more than the client.
  • counseling to help you get in touch with the inner you.
  • about telling the client what to do.

Customized to suit your needs

One more reason Dan Clark Associates can help guarantee your success as a leader — we understand that no two individuals are alike. We celebrate and respect your uniqueness. That’s why we help you develop solutions that fit the way you like to do things. You won’t find your coach pushing a “cookie-cutter” approach or giving “we-know-best” lectures.

Example Coaching Situations:

  • A new chairman faces a board in turmoil
  • The chair is at an impasse to improve a director’s performance
  • CEO is working for a divided board
  • A chairman faces a sensitive issue among board members and staff
  • CEO is working without direction: board is micromanaging; makes no effort to direct
  • A director feels the board is dysfunctional
  • The chair wants to deal with a dysfunctional director without creating animosity
  • A leader heads up a governance policy project for the first time
  • An executive or director is trying to move the strategic planning process up to visioning
