Boards as Visionaries

A board is about ends; management is about the means. A very important end is what you see in your mind’s eye as the ideal conditions, the outcomes of all you do over time.

Longer-term thinking brings stability to plans. Most organizations today need to seek farther horizons — how far? Learn how various levels of horizons are best accomplished by different groups in the organization. Examine the differences between visioning and strategic planning, and strategy v. tactics.

Be convinced that strategic planning is not dead; it just lacks vision.

Is your planning truly strategic, or are you missing something important? What if you have a visionary CEO? Can the Board just go with that vision? In this session, Dan translates Jim Collins’ definition of visioning from his book, “Built to Last” and applies that to what boards and their executives should do together.

After the session, participants will:

  • Identify 4 Tiers of planning with visioning at the top.
  • Clarify the roles of the board and management in planning.
  • Separate vision ideas from marketing ideas.
  • See the value of being visionary as a way to guide and direct management.
  • Have the criteria for a motivational vision statement.
